There are no deepened news on the construction origin of this area. The first significant event is the constitution of the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, of which we have the records in the XII century . Around this church it was developed a small stable neighborhood, in which the building of the family Palazzi - Trivelli gradually became the main fulcrum. The palace, brought back in its current forms by nineteenth-century interventions, was recently restored by the Province of Reggio Emilia, that hosts there its offices. In this area there was in ancient times the residence of that Guido Da Castello, mentioned by Dante in the Divina Commedia. Probably Dante himself lived in his residence in Reggio.
