The Statutes of Reggio of 1311 in indicating the terms of the village of P. ta Castello specify that it extended up to the Rosta. With a commission of July 3, 1314, the City of Reggio deliberated the construction of 24 roste around the town; you can not say whether the name of the locality derives from one of those indicated in the provisions or if it was already existing (1). In 1326 there is news of a church of S. Maria della Rosta still remembered in the first decades of the fifteenth century (2); there was probably also attached a small hospital (3). The Rosta mill is remembered in 1598 (4). The historical cartography of the XVI-XVIII century represents the structure with two vertical external wheels.
The plant with a press, fed by the waters of the Channel of Secchia, is recorded in the hydrographic map of Italy of 1888 (5). Along the surviving stretch of the old road of Scandiano (via Marzabotto) there is an ancient rural building of probable origin sixteenth century. It has a square plan on two levels with a four-pitched roof. On the ground floor there is a double porch with round lights and a low arch. The lights are sparse and uneven.
